In 1974, when I began making sculpture, I felt a need to clarify my intentions, as I could have no idea what my work was to look like.
I thought I should create entities which would connect people with all that is around us, and so much larger than ourselves. This is the unnamed, unknowable, which humans have always found so awe-inspiring. These unseen forces, from god to gravity have vexed, inspired, motivated, and humbled people for all time. All great accomplishments in art, science, or philosophy have, in some way, helped to reveal these compelling forces.
In 1996, I began making gardens as sculpture, and felt I finally had the best medium to seek out these deep mysteries.
Viriditas was created in 1998 to pursue that goal.
« Gardens are places of joy and reflection, with cycles of life and death drama. They are universal symbols of our culture and humanity. A garden clearly demonstrates our view of our connection to nature, and the earth.
For a garden, the site may direct the form, but it is the hopes and aspirations of our client that directs what is made. »
With such a creative construction background we are consistently sought out to correct or transform the most difficult locations. We have been able to provide a dynamic and fulfilling transformation for every Viriditas garden.
While each garden is different, they are similar in containing a unique and important element invented to deal with the most problematic aspect presented by the situation. Our solutions allow the resulting sculptural aspect to bring a fuller engagement with the garden experience.
The five gardens, featured here, reflect the land, the owners, and the vision Viriditas brings to every project.
Viriditas creates gardens as site specific living sculpture, he uses nature and constructed simulations of nature to create an enormous sculpture. In all his sculpture, even his earliest pieces, Jay envisioned them set into the landscape, or as a section of the land removed and placed in another context.
« Every day in the garden is a day of Thanksgiving. The beauty, bounty, and blessing of life are fully revealed in a garden. In the garden we can see ourselves as another piece of the exquisite puzzle, which is life. »
It is interesting that each garden is complete, and not lacking in any way, and yet if the gardens are viewed as a body of work, there is a clear evolution.
« Our role in designing and building couldn’t be more simple; reveal what is already there, but not easily seen, or felt, and to do so with respect and grace.»
So, the purpose of the garden is to allow us to realize that we are inseparable, and indistinguishable from the whole of what surrounds us.
Nowadays we are pursuing that goal in Colorado, in France and everywhere the projects would lead us.
« Thou hast a voice great mountain,
to reveal great codes of fraud and woe, which the wise, and great, and good, interpret, or make felt, or deeply feel.»
Stanza from Percy Shelley’s ode to MONT-BLANC.
